Film width guidance

Shrink wrap film width guide

Film width is a common reason for poor shrink wrapping results. If the film is too narrow the pack may not seal reliably; if it is too wide the tunnel has to shrink excess film, causing loose corners and waste.

Start with the largest product

Measure the maximum product width and height including tolerance. Future product sizes should be reviewed before the machine and film stock are finalised.

  • Measure maximum product dimensions
  • Avoid excessive film allowance
  • Check seal position and pack stability
  • Test with real product samples

Allow for seal and movement

The film needs enough allowance to wrap the product and seal cleanly, but not so much that the finished pack has excessive film.

Test with real products

A film calculation is only a starting point. Samples help confirm the correct film width, perforation and tunnel settings.
